Atlantis Dubai

The month of August was probably the longest month of my life. Since the kids were stuck indoors all day long because of the debilitating heat, I had to find a solution to remedy their boredom and insanity. I can't really take the credit for the solution we had come up with because it was all Axel's idea. I think he knew the urgency for all of us to get a break. He insisted that I booked tickets for a week in Dubai at the Atlantis so the kids could have some waterpark fun and burn off a little steam.

Atlantis is a child's dream come true. There are bright lights, imaginative displays and water, water, water. It was the perfect thing for my shut-in children.

A highlight was when Xavier noticed a vehicle completely engulfed in flames. He must have saw it when it just started on fire because we practically saw the entire scene from start to finish. The response was slow and, to be honest, the firefighters did not seem like the swiftest crew around. They were more interested in watching it burn than putting the fire out.

We spent two days at the waterpark and the kids could not get enough. They especially loved the 'Leap of Faith', which scared the pants off me. I spent most of my time sitting at the bottom of the waterslide waiting for my kids to come down. As a result, I heard 'Wow, that was insane!' in about 15 different languages. Man, I love Dubai.

We probably could have spent another 4 days there, no problem. I have to say it was pretty nice to sit back and relax and have no agenda at all. Energy was burned, junk food was eaten, and inside jokes were made. All the makings of a fabulous trip!

Dubai Layover

I arranged to have a day layover in Dubai on our way to Amman. I mainly wanted the older kids to experience Kidzainia and explore Dubai a bit. It is afterall, one, large, Middle Eastern playground. While visiting the kids did the following:

Stared at hammour larger than them.

Pretended to be pilots, because as we have proved, one can never spend enough time in an airplane.
Begged to be a cat, and refused to take it off until we arrived in Amman.

Scaled walls and realized that going up is a lot easier than coming down.
Worked at Mc Donalds because that is what all small children should aspire to.

Read magazines and even pulled off all the plastic covers because we are rebellious like that.

Watched mind numbing movies and praised Dad for bringing his fully charged iPad.

Sedona's Dubai

Sedona finally got her chance to go on a little excursion with just mom and dad. It was a lot for a little 4 year old to handle. To be truthful, I felt like I was a little tapped out from the novelty of Dubai. I wasn't sure there was much more I could do with her that would be exciting for both of us. After going to the mall:
...staring at camels...
....eating at Rainforest Cafe....

...riding the metro...

...shopping at Pottery Barn...
Leave it to Dona to choose the one and only pig toy in all of the Middle East. You should have seen the looks of disgust as she nestled and coddled her baby pig.

...and shaking a gold man's hand....

what more could be done?????

Apparently plenty, if you to go to a really cool place called Kidzainia. I know there are various 'kid cities' placed globally, but this was the first time I had ever seen such coolness. Within 7 hours Sedona did the following:

Became a baker...
Made a pizza...
Became a jeweler...
A firefighter...A pilot...
A dentist....
A milkmaid...
A painter...
A nurse...
and a model...

And at least 2o other occupations.

If you aren't familiar with Kidzania, you must try it out! Once you arrive, the child has to cash a check. After she runs out of money (from going to the salon, or making perfume, etc.) she has to earn money by working (as a cop, or a journalist, etc.). It was incredibly fun to just watch Sedona beam from ear to ear for an entire day straight.

Can I just tell you how much I adore my daughter? She has to be the sweetest and most unique child I know. What she lacks in hair she has in heart. It was so fantastic to take her on a fun little trip and spoil her till she fell over from exhaustion. I can't wait for the next mother/daughter adventure.

Where your gas dollars are going...

I have been in Dubai for the past 10 days consulting. It is so tough being away from the family. I miss my kids immensely.

I typically put in long hours in the office, but Fridays are my day off. The first thing I did today was go up the Burj Khalifa and faced my fear of heights. It wasn't bad, but I did find a deeper appreciation for all those blue suit workers I used to see working on the Burj when we lived in Dubai. A lot of them were harnessed on the side of the building in the open air (and only paid roughly $4USD a day, I might add). Truthfully, that is my description of hell.

Little know facts about the Burj:

1. It is the tallest building in the world (free standing and man-made).

2. Burj means building in Arabic.

3. The exact height was kept a secret until it was finally built.

4. It has 162 floors.

5. It has the highest elevator installation and the highest mosque.

6. It has the fastest elevator speed 64km/hour.

7. The top spire can be seen 94 km away.

8. Construction began September 2004, and the grand opening was on January 4th, 2010.

Sheik Zayed Road

9. The concrete that was used was enough to lay a 2,065 km-long pavement; and equivalent to the weight of 100,000 elephants.

10. Total cost to build was $1.5 billion.

11. It is about twice the height of the Empire State Building.

12. The outdoor temperature at the top is 10 degrees cooler than the bottom.

13. The price for office space is around $4000. a square foot.

14. It uses approx 954, 000 litres of water per day.
15. Only hours before the opening ceremony, Sheik Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, was told to rename the 'Burj Dubai' to 'Burj Khalifa' by Sheik Khalifa of oil-rich Abu Dhabi because Khalifa had bailed the Dubai Emirate out of financial distress.

Somehow this makes me want to ride a bike or buy a Smart car.

Xay's Talk

Typically, our Doha primary consists of over 60 kids. During the summer, it diminishes to about 10% of that number. As a result of the dwindling numbers, Xavier gave a talk this past Friday and Heavah is in line for next week. The following Friday I will be RS President, YW President, Nursery Leader, Activities Chairperson, and Parking Coordinator. It is hard not to overuse the members during the summer. I suppose they think if you are crazy enough to stay, you deserve the 50 callings.

I wasn't present during Xavier's talk because I am currently consulting in Dubai. Axel's tough love approach in helping Xavier with his talk was to simply enlist Heavah as his mentor. Apparently, the dialogue was heartwarming and sweet sounding to any parent's ears; and on the day of the talk, Heavah even stood at the podium with Xavier in case he needed any help.

Axel sent me these photos. Not only does it melt my heart, but it is also proof to them that they love each other very, very much. Sometimes they could use a wee reminder.

Mancation

Axel's friend, Brad, came to visit us during his summer break. He just graduated from the Air Force Academy and needed some downtime. It has been really fun having him around. Axel and Brad were going to take off to Afghanistan and then decided on Pakistan. Both trips didn't work out for various reasons so instead, they did an impromptu visit to Dubai. Here are some photos:Skiing at Ski Dubai:

Cruising around in the Ibn Battuta Mall starting at the Egyptian pavilion.
On to Persia...
Ending in China.

Axel picked up some pork because we live in a pork free country. Then he found out he could have been put in jail if he was caught. Is jail time worth fresh bacon in the morning? I am still trying to decide.
Their final stop was the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. In a way I am glad they did this one without me. I know I will go up eventually, but I am working up to it. The pictures didn't reassure me.

Their trip was short, but it seemed to be fun. They did a bunch more, but I think it is top secret. What do boys talk about when women aren't present? I am still trying to find out.
