Dead Dogs

Warning: If you have a queasy stomach, this may not be the post for you. In fact, this entire blog may not be for you.

There are things I have really become used to in Nepal:

1. Garbage

2. Poop (which can be found all over the streets in all forms-- human poop, baby poop, cow poop, dog poop, rat poop)

3. Dead dogs

Daily, I see dogs in their many stages of death:

1. The 'almost dead', which is about 90% of all Kathmandu dogs who are suffering from the large spectrum of diseases that can be found here.

2. The barely alive, which can easily be mistaken for dead so beware when encountering.

3. The pleasantly dead, which is a nice, fresh dog that has just passed of 'natural' conditions.

4. The grotesque dead, which is a splattering of brains all over the concrete with a liver found 5 feet away from the body.

5. The long, long time dead dog, which usually involves bloating, maggots or unidentified body pieces.

At first, it was disturbing; now, it is completely normal. I mean, 'Hey-kids-you-might-want-to-step-over-that-decapitated-dog' kind of normal. Two years ago there would have been some serious censoring and therapy talk afterwards. Yeah, nowadays, horror films have nothing on my kids.

Moral of the Story: Anyone can get used to anything.
